✶ Where You Are Right Now ✶

You can read the notes.
But can you sing the liturgy?

You’ve made it through Level I. You can read square notation. You understand the basics of Church Latin. That is a genuine achievement — most people who feel called to chant never get that far. But now you’re standing at the threshold of something deeper, and the path forward isn’t obvious:

  • You can read individual chants, but you don’t yet understand how the psalm tones work, or how to apply them to any text in the Office.
  • You’ve heard the Ordinary of the Mass — Kyrie, Gloria, Sanctus, Agnus Dei — but you don’t know how to navigate the Propers or what “syllabic,” “neumatic,” and “melismatic” mean in practice.
  • You want to serve at the liturgy — as a cantor, as a schola singer, as someone who can lead the Hours — but you’re not sure how to bridge the gap between reading notes and singing prayer.
  • Latin accentuation still feels uncertain, and you sense it matters for how chant sounds, but no one has explained it clearly.

“Knowing notation is the key. But the liturgy is the door. Level II shows you how to use what you’ve learned to actually pray.”

This course was a literal gift from God. The depth of Mr Jasper’s knowledge is clear, and this course offers me the reassurance of learning with a depth of understanding that would not otherwise be possible.

✶ The Path Forward ✶

From reading notes
to singing the liturgy.

Level II is where the tradition comes alive. Building directly on the notation and history you learned in Level I, this course places chant in its natural home — the Divine Office and the Holy Mass — and teaches you how to sing it with intelligence, confidence, and reverence.

You will learn all eight psalm tones, master the art of Latin cantillation, and walk through every major category of chant in the Mass: syllabic, neumatic, melismatic. You will understand how the liturgical year shapes what is sung, and why. Every lesson builds on the last.

“I’ve been a priest for 33 years and taught myself Gregorian Chant — but I was never able to fully master it, until now.” — Fr. Anthony Mary, FSSR, New Zealand

I

The Divine Office

Learn to chant the Hours with genuine understanding. All eight psalm tones, their terminations and flex points, Latin accentuation, and the relationship between tone, antiphon, and text.

II

The Roman Mass

Navigate every category of chant in the Mass — Proper and Ordinary, syllabic through melismatic — understanding not just how to sing each piece but why it sounds the way it does.

III

Latin as Living Sound

Latin accentuation is not decoration — it is the structural logic that chant was written around. Learn to hear and apply it so that every chant you sing sounds the way the Church intended.

IV

Ready to Serve

By the end of Level II, you will be equipped to function as a cantor or schola singer at the liturgy — not merely sight-reading, but singing as one formed in the tradition.

✶ Everything Included ✶

Two modules.
Everything you need
to sing the liturgy.

I Psalmody & Cantillation 23 lessons
II Chants of the Mass 13 lessons
I
Module I — Psalmody & Cantillation

The backbone of the Divine Office. You will learn every psalm tone in the Roman tradition, how Latin accentuation governs the way chant is phrased, and how the liturgical day and year structure what is sung. By the end of this module you will be able to cantillate any psalm text to any tone — a skill that unlocks the entire Office — and you will understand the natural, speech-like rhythm that gives Gregorian Chant its distinctive flow. Topics covered include: Latin accentuation, all eight psalm tones, the liturgical year and day, proper vs ordinary, special cases and additional tones, rhythm of psalmody, cantillation, and the relationship of Latin as shaper of the melody.

II
Module II — Chants of the Mass

The Roman Mass contains every type of chant the tradition has ever developed. You will learn the complete structure of the Mass, how to distinguish and sing the three major categories of chant — syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic — and how cadences and melodic motifs give each piece its characteristic shape and liturgical function. You will leave this module knowing not just how to sing individual chants, but why they sound the way they do and how they serve the rites they accompany.

36 Total
Lessons

Level II contains 36 structured lessons across two modules, including video lessons, quizzes, and integrated practice exercises. All content is self-paced with lifetime access. Optional 1-on-1 lessons with Christopher are available within both modules.

✶ Not Just Videos ✶

Live, personal guidance
when you need it.

One of the most common frustrations with online music courses is the absence of a real teacher who can hear you, correct you, and guide you forward. At the GCA, that option is always available.

You can book a live 1-on-1 session directly with Christopher — for chant feedback, vocal development, or simply to ask the questions that videos can’t answer. You will be heard. You will be corrected. You will improve faster.

This course was a literal gift from God! The depth of Mr Jasper’s knowledge is clear and this course offers me the reassurance of learning what I need to know with a depth of understanding that would not otherwise be possible. The price of this course is very generous!

Before this course, my chant skills were hitherto unrooted in any study. Thanks to Christopher’s expert instruction, I was able to confidently sing the Tenebrae Office of Holy Week. Next year, I shall hopefully be leading it.

Jasper

Christopher Jasper taught himself square neumes from his grandfather’s Liber Usualis at age seven. He trained under Dom Daniel Saulnier at the Abbey of Solesmes — the living centre of the 19th-century chant restoration — and lived as a Benedictine postulant at the Monastery of Norcia, Italy. He has directed sacred music in parishes and cathedrals for over 25 years.

He does not teach from a curriculum. He teaches from a life formed by this tradition — and that is the difference your ear will hear.

✶ Common Questions ✶

Before you decide,
let me address this.

“Do I really need to complete Level I first?” +
Yes — Level II is built on the assumption that you can already read square notation and have a working knowledge of Ecclesiastical Latin pronunciation. If you cannot yet read a chant from the page, begin with Level I. If you have equivalent formation from another source — a good choir director, a serious schola, formal study — you may be ready. Email Christopher if you are unsure: [email protected].
“What exactly are the psalm tones, and why do they matter?” +
The eight psalm tones are the melodic formulas used to chant the psalms in the Divine Office — the framework around which an enormous amount of sacred music has been built for over a millennium. Understanding them means you can apply them to any psalm text, not just memorize specific pieces. It is one of the most practically useful skills in all of sacred music.
“I have a busy life. Can I realistically do this?” +
The course is entirely self-paced. No schedule, no deadlines, no cohort to keep up with. You learn when you can — thirty minutes on a weekday evening, an hour on Sunday morning. The lessons are structured so that even short sessions produce genuine progress.
“What payment options are available?” +
Level II is $297. Flexible payment plans are available at checkout through Klarna, Affirm, Amazon Pay, and AfterPay. You can choose the option that works best for your budget.

The liturgy is waiting
for your voice.
