You’ve made it through Level I. You can read square notation. You understand the basics of Church Latin. That is a genuine achievement — most people who feel called to chant never get that far. But now you’re standing at the threshold of something deeper, and the path forward isn’t obvious:
“Knowing notation is the key. But the liturgy is the door. Level II shows you how to use what you’ve learned to actually pray.”
This course was a literal gift from God. The depth of Mr Jasper’s knowledge is clear, and this course offers me the reassurance of learning with a depth of understanding that would not otherwise be possible.
Dr. Ruth Butler Doctorate in Psychology · USALevel II is where the tradition comes alive. Building directly on the notation and history you learned in Level I, this course places chant in its natural home — the Divine Office and the Holy Mass — and teaches you how to sing it with intelligence, confidence, and reverence.
You will learn all eight psalm tones, master the art of Latin cantillation, and walk through every major category of chant in the Mass: syllabic, neumatic, melismatic. You will understand how the liturgical year shapes what is sung, and why. Every lesson builds on the last.
“I’ve been a priest for 33 years and taught myself Gregorian Chant — but I was never able to fully master it, until now.” — Fr. Anthony Mary, FSSR, New Zealand
Learn to chant the Hours with genuine understanding. All eight psalm tones, their terminations and flex points, Latin accentuation, and the relationship between tone, antiphon, and text.
Navigate every category of chant in the Mass — Proper and Ordinary, syllabic through melismatic — understanding not just how to sing each piece but why it sounds the way it does.
Latin accentuation is not decoration — it is the structural logic that chant was written around. Learn to hear and apply it so that every chant you sing sounds the way the Church intended.
By the end of Level II, you will be equipped to function as a cantor or schola singer at the liturgy — not merely sight-reading, but singing as one formed in the tradition.
Ready to bring your chant into the liturgy?
Enroll in Level IIThe backbone of the Divine Office. You will learn every psalm tone in the Roman tradition, how Latin accentuation governs the way chant is phrased, and how the liturgical day and year structure what is sung. By the end of this module you will be able to cantillate any psalm text to any tone — a skill that unlocks the entire Office — and you will understand the natural, speech-like rhythm that gives Gregorian Chant its distinctive flow. Topics covered include: Latin accentuation, all eight psalm tones, the liturgical year and day, proper vs ordinary, special cases and additional tones, rhythm of psalmody, cantillation, and the relationship of Latin as shaper of the melody.
The Roman Mass contains every type of chant the tradition has ever developed. You will learn the complete structure of the Mass, how to distinguish and sing the three major categories of chant — syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic — and how cadences and melodic motifs give each piece its characteristic shape and liturgical function. You will leave this module knowing not just how to sing individual chants, but why they sound the way they do and how they serve the rites they accompany.
Level II contains 36 structured lessons across two modules, including video lessons, quizzes, and integrated practice exercises. All content is self-paced with lifetime access. Optional 1-on-1 lessons with Christopher are available within both modules.
One of the most common frustrations with online music courses is the absence of a real teacher who can hear you, correct you, and guide you forward. At the GCA, that option is always available.
You can book a live 1-on-1 session directly with Christopher — for chant feedback, vocal development, or simply to ask the questions that videos can’t answer. You will be heard. You will be corrected. You will improve faster.

One of the deepest pains in this tradition is isolation — being the only person in your parish who cares about chant. Your Level II enrollment includes lifetime access to the Cantor’s Cloister, a private global community of people exactly like you.
Having earned my Master’s in Music Performance, I can honestly say this course is equivalent to a two-semester upper-level university course — yet still accessible to beginners. A sacred music conference would barely scratch the surface of what this provides. It’s worth every penny and more.

Dr. Ruth Butler Doctorate in Psychology · USABefore this course, my chant skills were hitherto unrooted in any study. Thanks to Christopher’s expert instruction, I was able to confidently sing the Tenebrae Office of Holy Week. Next year, I shall hopefully be leading it.

Christopher Jasper taught himself square neumes from his grandfather’s Liber Usualis at age seven. He trained under Dom Daniel Saulnier at the Abbey of Solesmes — the living centre of the 19th-century chant restoration — and lived as a Benedictine postulant at the Monastery of Norcia, Italy. He has directed sacred music in parishes and cathedrals for over 25 years.
He does not teach from a curriculum. He teaches from a life formed by this tradition — and that is the difference your ear will hear.
