The deepest layer of the tradition. Level III takes you into the modal system that gives chant its spiritual character, the ancient hymns of the Office, and the medieval manuscript markings that reveal how chant truly wants to be sung.
Complete all three levels and receive your GCA Certificate of Formation. Learn more below.
You have come a long way. You can read square notation, chant the psalm tones, navigate the Mass. You are already more formed than most people who love Gregorian Chant will ever become. But the deeper you go, the more you sense there is further to go still:
Semiology is not an add-on. It is the written record of the original singers speaking across thirteen centuries to tell you how it goes.
Having earned my Master’s in Music Performance, I can honestly say this course is equivalent to a two-semester upper-level university course — yet still accessible to beginners. It’s worth every penny and more.
Salma Horvath Master’s in Music Performance · Mother of six · USALevel III is where formation becomes mastery. You will enter the modal system that gives every chant its character, study the classical hymns of the Divine Office in their original metres, and then go all the way into Paleography & Semiology — learning the 10th century manuscript markings of St Gall and Laon and how to interpret them.
The semiological tradition runs through Dom Andre Mocquerueau, Dom Eugne Cardine, Dom Jean Claire, Dom Daniel Saulnier and Msgr. Alberto Turco — Christopher has studied and worked directly with Dom Saulnier and indirectly with Msgr Turco. What you receive here comes directly from that living lineage.
“The most comprehensive course in Gregorian Chant. I highly recommend it, regardless of price. It’s worth way more than it costs.” — Sergio Ramón Topete Ubach, Mexico
The modal system is not theory for its own sake — it is the spiritual and musical logic that determines the character of every chant. Learn to hear, identify, and apply all eight modes with genuine comprehension.
The ancient hymns are built on classical Latin metres. Understanding those metres changes how you hear and sing them.
The medieval neumes of St Gall and Laon contain interpretive detail that modern editions omit. Semiology is the discipline of reading those markings — and singing what the original cantors intended.
Finishing Level III - along with Levels I and II - means you have received the most complete formation in Gregorian Chant available anywhere online. You will receive your GCA Certificate of Formation to mark that achievement.

Enroll in Level IIIThe hymns of the Divine Office are among the oldest continuous vocal music in the Western world — and yet they are rarely taught with the depth they deserve. In this module you will study the classical Latin metres that govern their rhythm, including what to do with those itallicized hyper-metric syllables. You will understand why each hymn sounds the way it does, and how to sing them with the natural flow their texts demand.
The eight Gregorian modes are the tonal language of the entire chant repertoire. This module gives you a thorough grounding: what a mode is and how it works, the distinction between authentic and plagal modes, the four modal families, and a complete study of each of the eight modes in turn including melodic transposition, modal transposition and the three archaic "mother" modes. You will leave this module able to identify, understand, and work with any mode in the repertoire — a skill that transforms how you hear and sing every chant you encounter.
Semiology is the crown of Gregorian Chant study. It is the reading of the original medieval neumes — the manuscript markings left by the first singers — in manuscripts such as St Gall and Laon. These markings contain rhythmic and expressive information that later printed editions do not fully preserve. You will study paleography, the neumes of St Gall in depth, the Laon notation, and apply what you learn by singing real chant directly from the manuscripts: syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic. This is material of genuine scholarly depth, taught very accessibly, rooted in the Cardine–Turco lineage.
Level III contains 34 structured lessons across three modules, including video lessons, quizzes, and applied chant study directly from medieval manuscripts. All content is self-paced with lifetime access. Optional 1-on-1 lessons with Christopher are available at any time.
One of the most common frustrations with online music courses is the absence of a real teacher who can hear you, correct you, and guide you forward. At the GCA, that option is always available.
You can book a live 1-on-1 session directly with Christopher — for chant feedback, semiological guidance, vocal development, or simply to ask questions. You will be heard. You will be answered. You will improve faster.

Level III enrollment includes lifetime access to the Cantor’s Cloister — a private global community of serious chant students and singers. At this level, the community becomes especially valuable: you are working with material few people ever reach, and having a place to ask questions, hear others, and be encouraged matters.
If you are a priest, deacon, or member of a religious community, you are welcome to FREE access to all levels of the GCA formation — no questions asked. Simply email [email protected] and Christopher will send you a coupon code personally.
Having earned my Master’s in Music Performance, I can honestly say this course is equivalent to a two-semester upper-level university course — yet still accessible to beginners. A sacred music conference would barely scratch the surface of what this provides. It’s worth every penny and more.

Christopher Jasper trained under Dom Daniel Saulnier at the Abbey of Solesmes — the living centre of the 19th-century chant restoration — and at Le Centre d’Etudes Supérieures de la Renaissance in Tours, France. He lived as a Benedictine postulant at the Monastery of Norcia, Italy in 2014 and is a current Oblate of the Abbey. He has sung and directed sacred music in parishes and cathedrals for over 25 years.
His semiological formation comes directly from the Cardine lineage, through his personal training under Dom Saulnier and professional association with Msgr. Alberto Turco — student of both Dom Eugène Cardine and Dom Jean Claire.
