Hymns, Modes

✶ Where You Are Right Now ✶

You can sing the liturgy.
But what lies beneath it?

You have come a long way. You can read square notation, chant the psalm tones, navigate the Mass. You are already more formed than most people who love Gregorian Chant will ever become. But the deeper you go, the more you sense there is further to go still:

  • You hear the eight modes described but still cannot reliably identify them by ear or understand what makes each one spiritually and musically distinct.
  • You have sung the hymns of the Office but never studied the metres that govern their rhythm and shape their beauty.
  • You know that the medieval manuscripts contain interpretive markings not found in modern editions, but you have never been shown how to read them or what they mean.
  • You sense there is a level of understanding at which chant stops being something you perform and becomes something that forms you — and you want to reach it.

Semiology is not an add-on. It is the written record of the original singers speaking across thirteen centuries to tell you how it goes.

Having earned my Master’s in Music Performance, I can honestly say this course is equivalent to a two-semester upper-level university course — yet still accessible to beginners. It’s worth every penny and more.

✶ The Path Forward ✶

The ancient tradition
speaks for itself.

Level III is where formation becomes mastery. You will enter the modal system that gives every chant its character, study the classical hymns of the Divine Office in their original metres, and then go all the way into Paleography & Semiology — learning the 10th century manuscript markings of St Gall and Laon and how to interpret them.

The semiological tradition runs through Dom Andre Mocquerueau, Dom Eugne Cardine, Dom Jean Claire, Dom Daniel Saulnier and Msgr. Alberto Turco — Christopher has studied and worked directly with Dom Saulnier and indirectly with Msgr Turco. What you receive here comes directly from that living lineage.

“The most comprehensive course in Gregorian Chant. I highly recommend it, regardless of price. It’s worth way more than it costs.” — Sergio Ramón Topete Ubach, Mexico

I

The Gregorian Modes

The modal system is not theory for its own sake — it is the spiritual and musical logic that determines the character of every chant. Learn to hear, identify, and apply all eight modes with genuine comprehension.

II

The Hymns of the Office

The ancient hymns are built on classical Latin metres. Understanding those metres changes how you hear and sing them.

III

Semiology

The medieval neumes of St Gall and Laon contain interpretive detail that modern editions omit. Semiology is the discipline of reading those markings — and singing what the original cantors intended.

IV

Complete Formation

Finishing Level III - along with Levels I and II - means you have received the most complete formation in Gregorian Chant available anywhere online. You will receive your GCA Certificate of Formation to mark that achievement.

✶ Everything Included ✶

Three modules.
The deepest layer
of the tradition.

I Gregorian Hymns 7 lessons
II Modes 14 lessons
III Semiology 13 lessons
I
Module I — Gregorian Hymns

The hymns of the Divine Office are among the oldest continuous vocal music in the Western world — and yet they are rarely taught with the depth they deserve. In this module you will study the classical Latin metres that govern their rhythm, including what to do with those itallicized hyper-metric syllables. You will understand why each hymn sounds the way it does, and how to sing them with the natural flow their texts demand.

II
Module II — Modes

The eight Gregorian modes are the tonal language of the entire chant repertoire. This module gives you a thorough grounding: what a mode is and how it works, the distinction between authentic and plagal modes, the four modal families, and a complete study of each of the eight modes in turn including melodic transposition, modal transposition and the three archaic "mother" modes. You will leave this module able to identify, understand, and work with any mode in the repertoire — a skill that transforms how you hear and sing every chant you encounter.

III
Module III — Semiology

Semiology is the crown of Gregorian Chant study. It is the reading of the original medieval neumes — the manuscript markings left by the first singers — in manuscripts such as St Gall and Laon. These markings contain rhythmic and expressive information that later printed editions do not fully preserve. You will study paleography, the neumes of St Gall in depth, the Laon notation, and apply what you learn by singing real chant directly from the manuscripts: syllabic, neumatic, and melismatic. This is material of genuine scholarly depth, taught very accessibly, rooted in the Cardine–Turco lineage.

34 Total
Lessons

Level III contains 34 structured lessons across three modules, including video lessons, quizzes, and applied chant study directly from medieval manuscripts. All content is self-paced with lifetime access. Optional 1-on-1 lessons with Christopher are available at any time.

✶ Not Just Videos ✶

Live, personal guidance
when you need it.

One of the most common frustrations with online music courses is the absence of a real teacher who can hear you, correct you, and guide you forward. At the GCA, that option is always available.

You can book a live 1-on-1 session directly with Christopher — for chant feedback, semiological guidance, vocal development, or simply to ask questions. You will be heard. You will be answered. You will improve faster.

Mr. Christopher Jasper is a very knowledgeable and highly experienced Gregorianist. This is the most comprehensive course in Gregorian Chant. I highly recommend this course, regardless of price. It’s worth way more than it costs!

This course was a literal gift from God. The depth of Mr Jasper’s knowledge is clear, and this course offers me the reassurance of learning with a depth of understanding that would not otherwise be possible.

I went from zero knowledge and experience in Gregorian Chant to singing the complex offertory ‘Stetit Angelus’ and Alleluia ‘O Maria rubens rosa’ in only two months.

✶ Common Questions ✶

Before you decide,
let me address this.

“Do I need to complete Levels I and II first?” +
Yes - or equivalent formation/training. Level III assumes you can read square notation fluently, can sing all the psalm tones, and understand the various categories of chant in the Mass and Divine Office. If you have not yet completed Levels I and II, begin with Level I. If you have equivalent formation from another source and are unsure whether it qualifies, email Christopher to discuss: [email protected].
“What is Semiology, and is it really accessible to non-scholars?” +
Semiology is the study of the original medieval neume notation — the manuscript markings from St Gall and Laon (and others not covered in this course) that predate the square notation you already know. They contain rhythmic and expressive information not found in modern printed editions. It is a genuine area of scholarly study, but Christopher teaches it very accessibly and incrementally. If you have completed Levels I and II, you have the foundation to engage with it meaningfully. Many students find it the most illuminating part of the entire formation.
“How does the certificate work?” +
Upon completing all three levels, you will receive a GCA Certificate of Formation signed by Christopher Jasper. It is non-accredited — it carries no institutional recognition — but it marks the genuine achievement of completing the most complete formation in Gregorian Chant available anywhere online.
“I have a busy life. Can I realistically do this?” +
The course is entirely self-paced. No schedule, no deadlines, no cohort to keep up with. You learn when you can — thirty minutes on a weekday evening, an hour on Sunday morning. The lessons are structured so that even short sessions produce genuine progress. Live lessons are optional and can be scheduled on days/times that work for you.
“What payment options are available?” +
Level III is $297. Flexible payment plans are available at checkout through Klarna, Affirm, Amazon Pay, and AfterPay. You can choose the option that works best for your budget.
